Barcelona, Manchester United: Frenkie de Jong’s big clarification on his future

In front of the media with the Netherlands selection, Frenkie de Jong has released his truths about his mercato.

But where will Frenkie de Jong (25) play next season? The question should not even arise because his contract at Barcelona runs until June 2026 and Xavi seems quite satisfied with his performance. Yes, but the Catalan club is plagued by economic problems, as we know, and the sale of the Dutch midfielder could give him some air. In recent weeks, there is talk of a transfer to Manchester United, or even Paris SG, to replenish the coffers.

In a press conference with the Oranje team on Tuesday, the former Ajax man spoke about his future. “I used to be reckless when asked about other clubs. But that’s over. Have I been called? I can’t say anything about that, but I prefer to stay at Barcelona. Of course I understand, but I haven’t heard anything from the club’s management, so I guess nothing is concrete, or no agreement has been reached yet. There is no need to worry about it,” said De Jong before insisting.

“We didn’t win much, that’s a fair statement and I imagined things differently. We just have to be self-critical about it. But it’s not like I regretted my choice, certainly not. Barcelona has always been the club of my dreams, since I was very young. It’s still the case,” he insisted, unconcerned but not really surprised by the rumors that he is headed to MU, where his ex-coach in Amsterdam, a certain Erik ten Hag, has just signed.

“It’s a logical link, given my past with Erik ten Hag. But the connection is logical, anyone can make it. Have I been in contact with ten Hag? I can’t say anything more about that. I will not talk about that when it comes to other clubs or coaches,” said the Dutch international (40 caps, 1 goal), who will face Belgium with his teammates on Friday night (20:45). For the mercato, we will probably still have to wait to see more clearly…
